Softphone Overview
A softphone is an application (software-phone) that provides similar functions of a desktop or handheld phone (hardware phone). A softphone provides much of the same functionality and can extend the accessibility of a desktop phone. Example of use cases might be to still have access to make and take phone calls when you are away from your desk, or to provide better usability for someone with mobility limitations.

In most cases a hardware phone is recommended. Usually a softphone should not be considered as a replacement to a hardware phone.
