Paging and Intercom Variations

Paging and intercom is available in four variations:

Paging and Intercom With Another Extension (1 extension)

Your phone can be used to page another extension with one-way communication (Paging), and to page another extension with two-way communication (Intercom). The default functionality of the paging feature is one-way communication (Paging). It can be altered to be two-way communication (Intercom). The steps for using paging and intercom are the same. The only difference between the two is when you initiate a intercom enabled paging, you will be able to hear the (recipient) speak back to you.
Intercom functionality requires you to sign a privacy waiver. Contact Penguin for more details.

A paging/intercom recipient  who is knowingly in a page or intercom can press the 0 key on their phone to toggle mute and unmute, which completely blocks their microphone audio at the server level. During an intercom call the user can also press the mute button on their phone, which blocks their microphone audio at the phone level.

You can page and intercom an extension by dialing *8 , then dialing the extension . By default your paging/intercom will include a PIN for security. Contact Penguin if you do not know your PIN, want to change your PIN, want to remove your PIN,  add a PIN,  or want to change from paging to intercom functionality.

Example: paging extension 108
  1. dial *8
  2. dial 108
  3. press send/dial
  4. enter security PIN (optional)

The destination /recipient  extension will hear a beep , and you will be able to immediately speak  your paging or intercom message .

A desktop phone can have a button programmed for one-button paging and intercom functionality.

Due to privacy and security concerns, paging and intercom is not enabled for softphones.

Paging and Intercom With Multiple Extensions

Your phone can be used to page a preconfigured group of extensions with one-way communication (Paging), and to page a preconfigured group of extensions with two-way communication (Intercom). The default functionality of multiple the extensions paging feature is one-way communication (Paging). It can be altered to be two-way communication (Intercom). The steps for using group paging and intercom are the same. The only difference between the two is when you initiate a intercom enabled group paging, you will be able to hear the other parties (recipients) speak back to you.

Paging and Intercom Customizations

The paging and intercom can be customized to play pre-configured audio files. As the sound, style, and volume of the "beep" notifying a recipient that a page has started, it can be helpful to provide a more forceful notification that the paging has started, or to play pre-recorded scripts.
